From defensive fortress to home with swimming pool and tennis court
The Prince's Castle is an 18th century fortress, whose construction began in 1740 and whose purpose was to defend the Corcubión estuary from possible attacks. It is located in the parish of Ameixenda, on a small rocky outcrop on the coast, in the municipality of Cee in A Coruña. Its construction was simultaneous with that of the Cardenal castle, located on the opposite bank of the estuary. The castle ceased to be state property after a public auction at the end of the 19th century. Although it had several owners later, in 1985 it was acquired by the now deceased Galician businessman José Ramón Oreiro, who was in charge of carrying out important renovations to convert it into a summer residence. The old part, which was once an island, has an area of 1,900 meters square and consists of the fortress, with vaulted stone ceilings.
