Meta, the company that owns Instragram, Facebook and WhatsApp, is updating the privacy conditions of its users so that they authorize the use of their data to feed and train the models and functions of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) considers that said update «is being carried out in a non-transparent manner.»hindering the user's right to object and including the possible use of third parties, as reported to the Spanish Data Protection Agency.» «The lack of transparency in the update is manifested in a endless declaration of intent that hides a final authorization on the use of personal data for the development of its AI tool, which is complicated to identify and even more difficult to oppose, since this requires seven actions on the part of the user,» he highlights. Furthermore, according to the OCU, the right of opposition «is not complete , given that «Meta's AI does not distinguish in photos between the profiles of users who authorized the use of their data from the rest.»
«In fact, Meta does not inform what use it makes of the data of third parties who have not previously given their consent.among whom there may be minors who appear in family photographs or videos that have been posted on social networks«, he adds. For all these reasons, the OCU has requested the Spanish Data Protection Agency to investigate this new Meta update and, if the reported facts are confirmed, «urgently initiate action to prevent the use of the personal data of those affected (users and non-users) by your AI tool«.
