When talking about technology, it is common to think of devices, machines, algorithms or digital systems that make everyday life easier. But technology is much more than that: it is the set of knowledge, tools and processes that societies develop to transform their environment and improve their living conditions. From the invention of the wheel to artificial intelligence (AI), technology has been a fundamental driver of human progress. However, this progress has not always been equitable or sustainable, and that is precisely why I want to reflect on the relationship between technological development and the common good. The concept of common good refers to that which benefits everyone, to the material and immaterial goods that sustain community life: health, education, social justice, the environment, democratic cohesion. The common good is not only an ethical aspiration, but a political and social objective that guides collective development towards inclusion and shared dignity. The relationship between technology and the common good seems, at first glance, obvious. Don’t we develop new tools to improve people’s lives? Common sense would tell us that every technical advance should contribute to general well-being. But history teaches us that it has not always been this way. The industrial revolution brought prosperity, but also abysmal inequalities and labor exploitation. Nuclear energy offered a nearly inexhaustible source of electricity, but also the risk of mass destruction. The Internet democratized information, but opened the door to new forms of manipulation and control. In short, technology is neither good nor bad in and of itself; It is an instrument, undoubtedly powerful, but its impact depends on the ethical, social and political framework in which it is developed and used. The challenge, then, is not only to innovate, but to collectively decide at the service of who and what values ​​we put the innovation that gives rise to technological development. Today we live in a moment of unprecedented technological development. AI, biotechnology, robotics and quantum computing are transforming all areas of human life at breakneck speed. This context provides us with a unique opportunity to guide this development towards inclusive social progress. Never before have we had so many tools to improve health, expand access to education, facilitate the permanent training of workers and improve their working conditions. Technology can help us anticipate illness, personalize learning, automate repetitive tasks, and free up time for creativity and caregiving. In this sense, the potential of AI is enormous: it can be a true accelerator of collective well-being, as long as we know how to govern it with ethical and democratic criteria. It is not about stopping innovation, but about directing it where it is most needed: towards people, towards equity, towards sustainability. However, the big question is whether we are really taking advantage of this opportunity that the present offers us. I would say that the answer depends a lot on who answers it, since today two great visions confront each other: that of the techno-optimists and that of the techno-pessimists. The former trust that technology, by its own dynamics, will end up solving the great problems of humanity: climate change, poverty, diseases. They see AI, automation or global digitalization as an inevitable path towards greater efficiency and well-being. The latter, on the other hand, warn of the risks of growing dependency, the loss of jobs, the concentration of power in the hands of a few technological corporations and the erosion of privacy and individual autonomy. They point out that algorithms can reproduce social prejudices, that digital surveillance threatens fundamental rights and that the promise of efficiency sometimes hides a precariousness of work and a weakening of community ties. Both positions reflect partial truths. Technology can be emancipatory or alienating, inclusive or exclusive. It can reduce inequalities or multiply them, depending on who designs it, how it is regulated and for what purpose it is deployed. It is not, therefore, a question of choosing between enthusiasm or fear, but of assuming collective responsibility for its direction. What is decisive is not in the machine, but in the human decisions that surround it: who programs it, for what purposes, under what rules and with what accountability mechanisms. History shows that technical development without ethical reflection leads to profound imbalances. Therefore, it is not enough to celebrate innovation; It is necessary to ask who it serves, who it benefits and, above all, who it leaves behind. Only when society as a whole participates in this debate can we speak of truly shared progress. The future is not written, it is built from the present based on the decisions we make today as citizens, as institutions and as societies. But I think it is important to warn that current technological development will not automatically translate into an advance for the common good. In fact, without public deliberation and political commitment, inequalities and social fractures could be accentuated. With the aim of contributing our humble grain of sand to these great issues, Nausika was born, a citizen initiative that seeks to generate a space for reflection, dialogue and action on the ethical and social direction of technology. At Nausika we want to share knowledge and evidence, promote informed debate and, where possible, influence public policies to guide innovation towards inclusive progress. We believe that technology should be at the service of people and not the other way around; that technological development only makes sense if it expands opportunities for everyone. We therefore invite those who share this concern to join our reflections and initiatives, reflected on the website.
