Strengthening security and access to employment from a position of political moderation is essential for Federico Gutiérrez, mayor of Medellín. This was expressed by the Colombian politician, who is serving his second term with the We Believe Colombia movement, after remembering the times of violence that the city has had to overcome. «When talking about Medellín, it is impossible to attribute the transformation to a single person or political group. It has been a process of collective construction,» he said. In this context, Gutiérrez urged to leave behind the ideological confrontations that take place in his country and focus on the real concerns of the population. The councilor defended that it has been a sum of efforts that has managed to transform what was considered the most dangerous city in the world into a safer place, and place it below Washington, Philadelphia and Detroit in the violence rankings. Likewise, he highlighted the role that investment in innovation has played in changing both the economy and the image of the Colombian city. «Today Medellín invests 2% of GDP in activities related to innovation, science or technology. That, hand in hand with the productive sector, universities and the mayor’s office, begins to transform the city,» Gutiérrez explained. Regarding the problem of human trafficking in his city, he responded that his government is focusing its efforts on eliminating the exploitation of minors. “Last year we drastically increased the arrests of foreigners dedicated to the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents,” he defended. He commented that they work closely with the FBI.
