This Friday, May 31, the theft of more than 4,500 bitcoin (BTC) from the Japanese exchange DMMBitcoin was reported. The attackers hacked the platform, which led to the temporary paralysis of its operations. According to what was explained by the company itself, 48 billion yen, or about USD 305 million, valued in BTC, were lost. In total, it is a loss of 4,502.9 BTC that were stolen from the Japanese exchange, which is part of the Japanese securities company DMM. Hours after the theft, DMMBitcoin assured in its message that customer funds “are fully guaranteed.” This is because they committed to buy the equivalent amount of bitcoin which was stolen by hackers. The exchange reported that They are still investigating the details of the damage. And that they have already taken measures to “prevent the unauthorized leak” of funds. They also implemented restrictions on some services of the exchange house, “to ensure additional security.” These restrictions include the prevention of account reviews and the freezing of withdrawals. Spot trading was also limited to selling and not buying. And you can no longer open positions in leveraged trading. The theft of the 4,500 bitcoins from the Japanese exchange is one of the largest hacks recorded in terms of value. For example, the famous attack on Mt.Gox in 2014 cost the loss of about USD 450 million.
