Delgadodos forces are promoting the decline of democracy in the United States, the country that, until recently, was erected in its bulwark: the technology and the free market economy, the latter started by Ronald Reagan in 1981 and known as the Washington consensus. His combination has concentrated a huge wealth and political power in the hands of very few. The photo of the possession of the elected president accompanied by non -elected Millionaires illustrates this phenomenon well. Innovation and information and communication technologies (ICT) simultaneously enhance the growth and market power. The combination of both forces is responsible for the initial power to end up becoming permanent for various reasons such as the existence of economies of scale and «network effects» not accessible to new entrants; acquisition of competing companies; or access to databases not publicly available, among others. In addition, they observed that economic activity tended to concentrate on companies with greater power, known as the Superstars. Against what is usually argued, technological competition does not eliminate market power since, at present, it is most frequent that companies cooperate in joint projects, or delegate R&D to small businesses that will acquire whether they succeed. And this because, while the collusion of prices is illegal, technological cooperation is not. Innovation is a source of monopolistic benefits that initially favor the first investors that buy at low prices. If they succeed, those start-ups will be contributed in the stock market firing their value, which ends up concentrating wealth. The direct effect is the increase in economic inequality, which in turn translates into the increase in political inequality that undermines democracy. And this because the increase in private wealth raises private power, which is the ability to impose their own preferences to others when, in accordance with democratic rules, it should be limited to the right to vote. In its strictest formulation, the free market economy rejects any public program that acts as a security network. Let's compare two experiences. The introduction, in 1913, of the Ford T assembly chain destroyed some qualified works, but – unlike what happens today – created many jobs with relatively high salaries for workers without higher studies. In 1914, Ford doubled wages, trusting everything to the growth of productivity and the decrease in labor rotation. They were the main beneficiaries of the technologies of the twentieth century. On the contrary, the digital revolution and globalization have displaced these workers who have to leave the labor market; accept worse paid jobs; or go to swell the group called by Anne Case and Nobel Angus Deaton «dead for despair» (suicide, fentanil …). Meanwhile, educated elites have ignored the problem, insisting that market operation would fix everything. The result is known: Trump's choice and seriously threatened democracy. For M. Kurz (2023), restoring democracy requires reaching two objectives: suppressing private power and eliminating the extreme inequality that has turned the United States into an oligarchy; And, secondly, to ensure that the benefits of innovation and growth are distributed without leaving anyone behind. Both objectives are attainable if reforms are implemented. Given the differences in the visions of the world and the political preferences of the forces that boosted Trump, the confrontation is almost inevitable. Regardless of the result, the tragedy is that working class voters with the lowest educational level who went mass to their anti -elitist soflamas will continue to be the losers.
