In a move that probably won't surprise many (considering he's been describing himself as the «pro-bitcoin candidate» for months), Donald Trump decided to stop by the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville. Yes, That same Donald Trump who once said that Bitcoin is not money and was based on nothing. But, well, we are in campaign times and, as we all know, in campaign anything goes. Even praise what you previously despised if it's something that's become too popular and could get you votes. Trump was full of respect and admiration for the Bitcoin community and started his speech by saying that he's «thrilled to be the first American president to address a Bitcoin event anywhere in the world.» Going into his speech, Trump didn't say too much that he hadn't said before. Perhaps the only novelty was that He promised that the United States will never sell bitcoin under his administration. This will be different from what Germany did days ago, which, as BitcoinDynamic reported, sold 50,000 BTC. Basically, Trump maintains – and he repeated it in Nashville – that the United States should be a leader in the «crypto» industry (an expression he used dozens of times in his speech); that Biden has been the worst president in history and that, if the United States does not dominate Bitcoin mining, China will. This is starting to feel like a déjà vu of the Cold WarTrump even went so far as to promise that The United States, under your leadership, will become the capital of Bitcoin and the cryptocurrencies of the planet. It doesn't matter that we are talking about a decentralized global economy that knows no borders. What is important is that the United States leads. For the US to lead the cryptocurrency industry, One thing Trump will do — probably rightly — is change the management of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

“The day I take office, the crusade against cryptocurrencies will end. I will fire Gary Gensler and appoint a new Secretary. And I will appoint a new SEC Chairman who believes that America should build the future, not block the future.” Donald Trump, candidate for President of the United States.

In response to the standing ovation he received, he repeated it again, but in a more measured tone: “I will fire Gary Gensler.” As a result, the audience again applauded the former president. And, of course, attacks and criticisms of the current administration were a constant throughout the 40-minute speech, thus reminding that, rather than talking about bitcoin because he is interested in the subject, Trump went hunting for votes from bitcoinersFinally, he closed his speech with a thank you to Bitcoiners, but adding some rather striking words: «have fun with whatever you're playing». Could it be that at the end of the day, in Trump's mind, Bitcoin is still a toy for technologists and not a financial revolution that could one day end the reign of printed money by the States (even with the US dollar)? In short, Trump said what his audience wanted to hearBut make no mistake: he is in the middle of a presidential campaign, and every word, every promise, is calculated to attract votes. He may have patted American Bitcoiners on the back. But words are carried away by the wind. It remains to be seen whether, when the time comes, whether he keeps these promises or whether it was simply a show on his pre-election tour.
