The Copa del América in Barcelona has had an impact that goes far beyond sporting competition. Just as the 1992 Olympic Games were a tool to transform the city, now the sailing competition has been a tool to make possible the second great transformation of the coastline that has allowed us to recover new public spaces, improve the connections of the city with the sea and promote new equipment that will reinforce the commitment to the blue economy.More informationWe are a city with a port, but for many years we lived with our backs to the sea and we did not discover it until the great Olympic transformation. That was the first great moment of connection between the port and the city, a rediscovery focused on the dignification of spaces intended largely for leisure. The change that we now face wants to go one step further. We believe that Barcelona's relationship with the sea should integrate typical uses from the rest of the city such as culture, economic activity, research centers or staying and walking in quality public spaces. And to do so, the first thing What is needed is to adapt all spaces in contact with the sea to the new climatic reality. A new management of the coastline and the urban elements that make it up is necessary. If we want to maintain the enjoyment of this space, we must adapt and we must adapt the physical configurations of the promenade, as we will do on the Mar Bella promenade. The second step is the renovation of the main spaces that connect sea and city. Actions such as the new Olympic Port, the reform of the Eastern Dock Sheds or the culmination of the citizen opening of the Nueva Bocana, have allowed public space to be recovered. Also the acceleration of the urban transformations of the new Rambla and Via Laietana have made it possible to further integrate the coastline into the city. But we cannot yet perceive the great transformation that we have promoted. If at the time we imagined a Diagonal that had to reach the sea, before being able to promote the new economy in 22@, now we are carrying out the urban transformation to be able to promote the blue economy on the coast. Barcelona wants to become a benchmark for the blue economy. That is why, together with other administrations, we are working on three projects that will create 45,000 square meters of spaces dedicated to research and entrepreneurship. The first is the future Marine Technology Park, which will allow the UPC to expand its infrastructure dedicated to maritime engineering and nautical. The second is the Barcelona Sea of Science, where the CSIC will be able to expand the Institut de Ciències del Mar to create a new space where citizens can get closer and learn about the culture of the oceans. And finally, the Blue Tech Port will be a new innovation hub for the Port of Barcelona to promote entrepreneurship in blue economy projects. This is the Barcelona that remains after the America's Cup, a city more connected to its coastline and moving towards a blue economy. A legacy that definitively takes us into the sea.Laia Bonet She is the first deputy mayor of Barcelona
