The graphics card maker wants to reserve its GeForce products for gamers rather than Ethereum cryptocurrency mining. Nvidia is not neglecting this industry however and announces a dedicated processor.
GPUs, graphics processors, find applications in different fields. This was already the case with supercomputers. However, the cryptocurrency mining industry is also interested in the capabilities of GPUs.
The development of the use of its GeForce line by Ethereum miners, however, is not to Nvidia's liking. Why ? Because this demand penalizes its main market, namely that of gamers.
Nvidia clamps its GeForce GPUs for Ethereum mining
" We are players, down to the fingertips », Hammers Nvidia in a blog post. And the manufacturer would like to recall that it has designed its GeForce graphics processors for this category of customers.
However, this clientele requires more GPUs. In this context, Nvidia is therefore adopting a radical strategy to say the least. On the occasion of the release on February 25 of a new card, the GeForce RTX 3060, the manufacturer will limit the uses of mining.
Nvidia wants to ensure that its products are reserved for gamers. And how to regulate uses? Quite simply by limiting the computing power of its graphics cards for mining applications.
The company announces that the RTX 3060 drivers are designed to detect specific attributes of the mining algorithm.Ethereum. And if detected, the software will automatically limit the hash rate to around 50%.
NVIDIA CMP, the processor for minors
Nvidia's goal is clearly to make its GPUs less efficient for mining and therefore less attractive to this industry. An attack in order? On the contrary, argues the manufacturer. This decision " makes sense ".
The characteristics of GeForce RTXs make them suitable for the needs of gamers. Is Ethereum mining in fact excluded from the applications of Nvidia products? No, the builder is not closing the door. It announces indeed a new range intended especially for mining.
From now on, NVIDIA CMP, or Cryptocurrency Mining Processor, will be the line of products for professional mining. No graphics here, so no outputs for a video display. These processors " do not meet the specifications required for a GeForce GPU and, therefore, have no impact on the availability of GeForce GPUs to gamers. "
“Creating tailor-made products for customers with specific needs helps provide the best value for customers. With CMP, we can help miners build the most efficient data centers while preserving GeForce RTX GPUs for gamers, ”says Nvidia.
