A group of prominent technologists, researchers and influencers, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Andrew Yang, signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems like ChatGPT.
They ask OpenAI to hit the pause button on their tool training. The current version is GPT-4. According to the petition, ‘freedom advocates’ argue that if the private company does not stop training its AI beyond the current GPT4, governments will force the company to do so.
The letter currently has more than 1,100 signatures. Among the people who signed the letter is Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple.
The arrival of GPT4 two weeks ago created excitement and alarm among people worried that, left unchecked, it could annihilate humanity.

For this reason, the authors of the letter state that it is necessary to take a six-month pause in the development of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, to assess the implications they may have on society and technology in general.
While the implications of artificial intelligence on society and technology are still not fully understood, the scientific community and technology influencers are clearly concerned about the speed and power of development underway.
The letter states that AI systems with artificial intelligence pose significant risks to society and humanity.
“Humanity can enjoy a prosperous future with AI. Society has taken a break from other technologies with potentially catastrophic effects on society. We can do it here and ensure a better future for everyone,” the letter said.
Interesting to note that most of the people who signed the letter are broad supporters of technology and freedom. Including many of them suffered from government coups asking companies to restrict their operations.
