Digital land values more than real estate in São Paulo

New online blockchain games are raising millions in digital land purchased by common people and even large companies. Is it worth investing in virtual land or is it just another bubble?

Vinícius Gonçalves is a recent investor in the cryptocurrency market, he started investing in March, but soon found his niche in the games area and so far has been doing well.

He was already a fan of RPG games since he was a kid, “I played RuneScape for a long time, about 10 years. But it tied me to Assassin's Creed, God of War, Counter Strike, FIFA and PubG. I'm addicted” – revealed Gonçalves.

Homeless and 27 years old, Vinícius decided to buy several lands in the Ember Sword game for 40 dollars each.

Ember Sword is a game located in the fantastic land of Thanabus, where players can buy land and play adventures with their characters within this universe.

Lands and cosmetics are represented in blockchain through NFTs, non-fungible tokens unique to certain digital platforms.

“Simply put; each cosmetic and plot of land will be connected to a unique “token” in the blockchain, and the blockchain itself is essentially a public database.”, explains the game.

It is as if the registry left the physical world and ended up in the virtual world being used for digital properties.

The lands of Vinícius had an increase of 1.275%, surpassing the 550 dollars or R$ 2,884.59 in less than 3 months.

Physical properties are losing to inflation in SP

The same fate does not seem to be on the side of those investing in real estate in the country's economic capital.

According to a survey conducted by Grupo SP Imóvel, among the most researched neighborhoods in São Paulo, the square meter was 1.56% in January 2021 compared to the same period last year.

This means that property prices have risen less than the 4.52% inflation. With the pandemic, many professionals decided to migrate from the capital of São Paulo to the tranquility of the interior, and others are placing their investments in the metaverse, the new refuge for much of the population.

Migration to the metaverse and digital terrains

“You can think of the metaverse as an embedded internet, where instead of just viewing content – you're in it. And you feel present with other people like you're in other places, having different experiences that you couldn't necessarily do in a 2D app or webpage, like dancing, for example, or different types of fitness.” – said Mark Zuckerberg in podcast for The Verge.

This digital universe that will mix 2D with 3D, augmented and simulated reality will likely need a digital property system. A whole new economy for a different universe.

And many cryptocurrency enthusiasts are betting that ownership will be built on top of open protocols like the blockchain. There is a lot of speculation and part of games may be in a “bubble”, but just as happened in the “.com” bubble, several important companies emerged from there, such as Amazon and Google.

Several games are already migrating their properties to open networks, we talk about some of them in the articles below. In fact, the game Decentraland had land purchased by companies like Binance, it's worth understanding:
