Iberdrola will receive aid of more than 170 million euros to build storage projects, from the first call for aid to innovative energy storage projects co-financed with FEDER 2021-2027 funds, granted by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). Specifically, the company will allocate 130 million to co-finance 11 BESS batteries (Battery Energy Storage System, for its acronym in English), 22 million to three industrial thermal storage projects and 18 million to expand the capacity of a pumping project. The batteries which will be located in Extremadura (4), Galicia (3), Castilla y León (2), Asturias (1) and Andalusia (1), will have an average power of 35-40 MW and 10 of them with shared access, which will allow benefiting from synergies between projects. Five of them will be hybridized with photovoltaic technology and five with wind, while one will be stand-alone (autonomous), an energy storage system that operates independently. The three industrial thermal storage projects They have a total capacity of 190 MWht and will be located in Andalusia, the Valencian Community and Galicia, and will cover the food and beverage, ceramics and canning industries. He pumping project It will serve to expand the capacity of the Torrejón plant, located between the Torrejón-Tajo and Alcántara reservoirs. Iberdrola promotes the efficient energy storage as one of the key levers for electrification, decarbonization and energy transition. To do this, it is committed to large-scale storage, through pumped hydroelectric plants, and small-scale storage, through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), in Spanish Battery Energy Storage Systems (SAEB). The company is a leader in energy storage through hydroelectric and pumped generation, with 4.5 GW of installed power. Among the pumped hydroelectric plants The company’s most notable plants within the Iberian Peninsula are the La Muela, Villarino, Támega and Santiago-Sil-Xares plants. Iberdrola has been a pioneer in the development of electrical energy storage with lithium ion batteries. In 2021, it was the first company to install a hybridized battery with photovoltaic technology in Campo Arañuelo III (Extremadura). The company also has a 20 MWh battery in Puertollanowhich stores the production obtained from a nearby solar plant to generate green hydrogen from the largest plant of this energy source for industrial use in Europe, and two in the Basque Country. One, in Abadiño (Vizcaya), connected to the evacuation of the Oiz wind farm, which allows it to be connected directly to the grid and operate without the need to be connected to a facility, and another in Áraba, which stores wind energy in the Elgea-Urkilla wind farm. At the moment, Iberdrola has six more batteries in an advanced state of construction in Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha and Andalusiarecognized as Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), in its renewable energy, green hydrogen and storage division (ERHA)
